Caring for Boucle: Keeping Your Sofa Looking New

Caring for Boucle: Keeping Your Sofa Looking New

Boucle gets its texture from small loops of yarn. Those loops hide everyday marks well, but they also catch crumbs and pet hair, and they flatten if they are rubbed the wrong way. A little regular care keeps the fabric looking as it did on delivery.

Every week

Vacuum with the upholstery brush on low suction, working with the pile rather than across it. Turn and plump the seat cushions so they wear evenly.

When something spills

  • Blot straight away with a clean white cloth. Do not rub, it pulls the loops.
  • Dab with lukewarm water and a drop of wool detergent, then blot dry.
  • Let it dry naturally, away from radiators and direct sun.

Once or twice a year

The covers on our Oslo sofas and armchairs come off. Have them dry-cleaned rather than machine washed, and put them back while slightly damp so they settle to the shape of the cushions. If a loop is pulled, trim it level with sharp scissors; never cut it at the base.
